What is the first bird that you saw on the first day of the year? Does this bird have some sort of special significance for the rest of the year? I am always anxious to find out what is at the feeder on the first day of the year. This year it was the Downy Woodpecker for me. As I was preparing my first cup of coffee it was already busy at the peanut feeder hanging from the tree in my backyard in Saint-Lazare.
For something a little different for this blog, feel free to name the first bird you saw today in the comments section below, along with where you saw it (geographically speaking). I am curious what people are seeing/saw on the first day of 2017!
It’s always a Chickadee … rarely anything but.
Yes that was my lot a few times too 🙂 Guess it depends where you live. Just happy the Downy has been hanging around a lot lately!
I was pretty lucky this year, my first bird of 2017 was a not so common wintering White-throated Sparrow at my feeders.
Townsend’s Solitaire…..Mount Royal Cemetery
Chuck Kling.
My first bird is the usual bird I see when I come down to prepare breakfast, the American Goldfinch
Jean-Sébastien and Chuck, nice ones!
That’s nice Jean, and now we have five species already!
House finch–quite round in its blush puffer jacket!
My first bird at the feeder was a Dark-Eyed Junco.
Thanks for participating Elizabeth and Rejean. Interesting that everyone is reporting a different species – or perhaps to be expected?
My first bird was a Blue Jay sitting on top of a feeder.
American Robin, which was a change from the usual American Crow. I’m hoping that’s a good omen!
First birds I saw were two crows and then my favourite — chickadees, with one landing on my hand?
