Our sanctuaries
Overview
Bird Protection Quebec and its members are proud of its position as a pioneer in the acquisition of property for conservation purposes. Our first property, Île aux Perroquets on the Lower North Shore, was bought in 1937, well before the idea of conserving land just for the sake of nature was popular. Since then, we have continued to acquire important habitats, either by purchase or through the generous donation of members or friends who have entrusted us to preserve their land to the benefit of Quebec’s birds. As of 2026, these total just over 500 hectares (1,235 acres).
Please note that our properties are protected sanctuaries and it should not be assumed that they are accessible or open to the public. Many, in fact, do not even have a trail system but are maintained as protected areas where both flora and fauna can thrive undisturbed. Please refer to the “Public Access” section in the description of each property, and, when in doubt, contact us at 514-637-2141 before planning a visit.

Properties BPQ has funded
In addition to our own sanctuaries, BPQ has made several large donations to assist other organizations in acquiring and protecting properties. For example, we assisted the Centre d’interprétation du Milieu Écologique (CIME) by making a joint purchase of a small property on Mont St-Gregoire, which has been entrusted to them to manage and maintain. One of BPQ’s most substantial monetary donations was made in celebration of our 100th anniversary to Nature Conservancy Canada to help fund their purchase of one of the oldest bogs in Quebec, located at Covey Hill on the Canada/US border. The sector was named the BPQ Centenary Sanctuary, in recognition of our important contribution to their acquisition of this property.
